Voice Teacher -

Voice Teacher

For the first time, in my life (truly) I was able to sing for the committee with my full self in the room. The director was excited and wanted to hear more.

What separates Lindsey from many other voice teachers is her varied background as both a performer and an educator.  She has performed in musical theatre, operas, contemporary American plays, and Shakespeare’s classics.  She also is an experienced educator, having taught middle school chorus and drama, directed student plays, coached students through New York State School Music Solo festivals, taught group singing to adult beginners, and worked with private students ages 11- older adults. I am able to adapt to the goals of each student and challenge him or her to discover artistic accomplishments they did not know they could achieve.

Just as I learned to let go and trust my voice, I intend to trust myself more. This openness allowed me to rediscover a spontaneity and find joy in singing again.

Working on one’s singing technique need not be a mystical venture, but it is filled with results beyond those we could dare to expect at the onset.  People of all ages and levels of expertise can benefit from learning to express themselves with a vocal ease and freedom.

Currently, Lindsey teaches private students privately and was an instructor at Teachers College - Columbia University (2018-2020 & 2006-2008), including graduate students in music and those studying acting at Columbia University’s School of the Arts. From 2015-2019 she taught private voice to students ages 9-17 at Random Farms Kids' Theatre in Elmsford, NY. Lindsey’s students range from beginner to professional performer and everyone in the middle. She works to help students find joy, believability, creativity and freedom within music and theatre.

While reflecting on how I have become more confident in my singing, I realize that first and foremost, I trust my ability to self-direct my learning process.

The vocal technique Lindsey teaches combines vocal exercises and repertoire to help each student become an artist capable of independence, creativity, and excitement.  The exercises are designed to work through the process of singing, allowing students the ability to employ their unique voices.  She teaches using plain language that is developmentally appropriate and grounded in anatomy and the physical practice of singing. This allows her to help guide students to independence and understanding about how to best mobilize their voices without the use of mysterious imagery that, at best, only works sporadically.  Using her strong understanding of vocal anatomy and development, she tailors her explanations so they are developmentally appropriate for all ages.

Rather than being so self-critical, I learned that honest inquiry in a non-judgmental way is more empowering than sugar coated praise that does not feel authentic. It allows room to seek improvement as well as celebrate growth. This openness allowed me to rediscover a spontaneity and find joy in singing again. I am truly grateful to Lindsey, because this semester I was able to find my voice again, both literally and metaphorically.”

I came to Lindsey to assist with my Juilliard voice class. I was studying opera for the first time and found the musical form to be quite challenging. Lindsey was incredible! She embodies all the qualities one seeks in a gifted teacher: experience, professional knowledge, technique, people skills and trust. I have never enjoyed singing more than I did with Lindsey. Every week I worked with her I felt like I made a new discovery about my voice. Her focus on ease and tension-free singing changed the way I approached the production of sound. Lindsey nurtures her students while inspiring the artist within them. She is an absolute asset to anyone looking to improve their confidence and ease in singing.

Lindsey was my singing teacher and drama instructor in school for the last three years before she left for Germany and in those three years, she has helped me improve so much in my singing and acting. Especially during the school musicals which she directed, such as Once on This Island, Guys and Dolls, and 13, she was always so encouraging and took the time to really help me on my technique. With her help, I have become a much stronger singer and actor and I can't thank her enough for it! She's a great teacher and talented singer and she definitely deserves 5 stars!
